Today we make a great stride forward in meeting the California public education system’s goal of preparing all students for college and career. Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed into law AB 1240, which updates the definition of “pupil achievement” that schools report in their Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) in an important way.

Charged with finding new ideas for increasing college completion in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys and Inland Empire, the new Council for Post-Secondary Education has an important responsibility—and a remarkable opportunity—to tackle issues at the core of our state’s dismal postsecondary completion rates.

In his State of the State Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he has appointed Linda Darling-Hammond to head California’s State Board of Education, and I am thrilled.

As we launch the request for proposals for the 2019 Linked Learning Convention, I want to take a moment to dive into why we chose Palm Springs, CA for our next gathering.

At its best, the start of the school year brings a renewed sense of purpose, promise and possibility.

What an honor it was to award the 2018 Linked Learning Scholarship to five outstanding students from across California, and to offer financial support for them to pursue their post-secondary dreams.

I want to reflect on my brush with royalty last week.
